Royal Kenz Tunisca 2010

Back from the Royal Kenz on the 29th August, after reading the reviews over the last 4 months, not sure if we were in the same hotel. Could not fault the hotel or the experience, as a seasoned reviewer will mention areas separate.

We arrived late i.e. 10:30pm and as the coach was full 40 guests plan B went into action, whilst I get the cases, the good wife heads for check in, always first in, and by the time I arrive with cases everything is sorted, Key in hand we head for the room, we were lucky to have asked ahead for the new block, standard rooms but twice the size, yes you are facing the main road, but the peace and quiet, it was great.

The room measures a good 17 yards by 5 yards, flat screen TV new air con chilled to 5c each night, consent hot water, extra large bed and a sitting area, all were tiled with a small carpet. We took our own kettle, coffee etc, no need to upgrade to a superior room ask for rooms over 625-631.

As we were all inclusive we soon filled the fridge with soft drinks and water each day, yes you can ask for unopened drinks to take to your room.

We ventured down stairs at 11:00pm and sat in the Salon Bar, a waiter quickly served us and explained the all inclusive package, and also mentioned that we could go directly to the bar to be served, we asked for red wine and were surprised to be offered a half or full bottle, we were expecting it by the glass. After past reports of bad service, it was total different to what we expected.

Pool

Next morning ventured down to the pool area before breakfast, which I will mention shortly.

8:00am and not a sun bed in site, we found 2 and placed under a tree for shade, it turns out that 4-5:oclock is the norm for grabbing a sun bed, towels and books placed ready, this is caused by certain groups having early breakfast sitting at 6;00am so putting towels out early. I placed ours out at 6:00am and went back to bed for an hour.

What was annoying was how many had placed towels out, but never used them all day, again in prime spots, re comments on waiters with ALL IN quests not serving you, I give the same waiter 1 dinar each day at 10:00am and he served us all day without question, always asking if we wanted a new drink, Mattresses were 1 dinar each so it was costing us 3 dinar a day at the pool (£1.50)

There are 2 pools the main one we used, found that a lot of the tiles were breaking away on the bottom exposing bare concrete, will need drained and re tiled. A lot of pool games so you are limited to times in the pool, otherwise sit in the swallow end,

All inclusive

The all inclusive will be running until October and it is pity it is stopping, met all of our expectations, yes there is a limited choice, but we received plenty of bottled water and soft drinks in cans in hotel and to take back to the room. Wine was by the bottle at meal times, as well as bottled or daught beer, spirits were a bit weak, only bug bear was paying for a bottle in French restaurant which was overpriced for the quality. We encountered no problems with the staff, happy to serve you, or if busy it was just as quick to go to the bar myself, Did not see anyone drinking excessively, but the waiters soon spotted you if you give a drink to any on normal board.

Meals

There is a poor set up for meals as there is 2 sittings and they seemed to make the rules up each day, we were ALL IN and could have breakfast from 6:00am to 10:30pm then lunch from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and dinner from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, whilst others were turned away for either going in to early or late,

Hotel itself

No problems at anytime obtaining seating day or night, reception helpful, the new spa is first class, and as we were in the new block, we had a separate lift next to the spa, which was always free, at the bottom of the lift door/spa there is a pot with dried rose buds which give off a nice perfume, a handful a day was taken to the room just to refresh the air. The pictures and decoration in the new block were first class, and you are close to the indoor pool. Internet access, again talk to the staff and respect them and they will return the favour. Please if given the chance book late check out at 6:00pm as its well worth it, if not it’s a bun fight trying to use the curtsey rooms and all the cases are kept in the lobby, funny watching people changing in the lobby etc. We came out of our room at 6:00pm and down onto the coach at 6:15pm.

Entertainment

Entertainment for the night is posted on the board outside the restaurant, now first night was the resident organist, who is quite good in a way, next night was advertised as a duo, the organist and a guitarist, and you guessed it the next night was a live band a drummer turned up with the duo, normal bingo, line dancing and the odd local turn (fire eaters, dancers,) Most nights we sat with different couples and just talked and made our own entertainment.

Day entertainment consists of various games and pool games and that sums it up really, very low key.

Overall.

Would I go back, yes being 3 times already and the hotel is what you make it, done all the trips etc, so basically stayed in the hotel grounds, no illnesses, no complaints, we made the holiday what we wanted and for the cost was value for money, will be asking for the new block again.

Ps

Talking to guests there seemed to be a big difference on prices everyone paid, but at the end of the day you tick the box to accept the price, by the way we secured a price of £460 each including ALL IN, late checkout in room, flight meals and prebooked seats, only exchanged £40 on holiday all week for tips, shop and bottle wine in the French restaurant.
